What is Myopia and why is it a concern?

Myopia: A Growing Concern for Singapore's Nation of Sharp Minds

Singapore and the Myopia Challenge

Did you know Singapore holds the unfortunate title of "Myopia Capital of the World"? Here, nearsightedness, or myopia, affects a staggering percentage of the population. As an optometrist, I see firsthand the impact this condition has on people's lives. But fear not, there's plenty we can do to understand, manage, and even prevent myopia.

What is Myopia?

Myopia is a vision condition where distant objects appear blurry, while close-up tasks like reading are clear. This occurs because the eyeball elongates, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it.

Why is Myopia a Concern in Singapore?

Unlike the global average of 30%, a whopping 80% of young adults in Singapore are myopic. This number is expected to climb even higher in the coming years. Our busy lifestyles, with extensive screen time and less outdoor activity, are contributing factors.

Genetics and Myopia: A Family Affair?

While genetics play a role in myopia development, environmental factors are crucial. Focusing on screens for extended periods and neglecting outdoor activities like playing in the sun can accelerate the progression of myopia, especially in children.

The Effects of Untreated Myopia

Leaving myopia unaddressed can lead to more than just blurry vision. Eye strain, headaches, and even serious sight-threatening conditions like retinal detachment, glaucoma, and cataracts are potential risks. Early detection and treatment are key to maintaining healthy vision.
