What Are Photochromic Lenses?

Photochromic lenses are spectacle lenses that darken outdoors and return to a clearer state indoors. The tint adjusts automatically according to the amount of ultraviolet (UV) light reaching the lens, allowing the same prescription glasses to be worn across different lighting conditions.

They can be useful for people who keep their prescription glasses on throughout the day but do not want to carry a separate pair of sunglasses for every short trip outdoors. However, their changing tint also comes with a few limitations, particularly for driving and prolonged exposure to intense glare.

How Photochromic Lenses Work

Photochromic lenses contain light-sensitive compounds that react to UV light. When the lenses are exposed to UV outdoors, these compounds change their molecular structure and absorb more visible light. This is what causes the lenses to darken. This means that when you enter a building or move into an area with much lower UV exposure, the compounds gradually return to their original structure and the lenses become clear again. 

The process of darkening usually begins quickly, while the return to clear tends to take longer. The exact speed of this varies according to the type of lens, its material, temperature and strength of the UV exposure.

While they remain clear or close to clear indoors and the tint adjusts according to the available UV light while outdoors, at night, photochromic lenses behave much like ordinary clear prescription lenses because there is insufficient UV to activate the tint. 

Most photochromic prescription lenses today are made from plastic. Depending on the lens technology, the light-sensitive compounds may be incorporated beneath the lens surface or applied as a specialised surface treatment. Photochromic glass lenses also exist, but they are less commonly fitted in modern everyday eyewear because they are less flexible and might crack on impact.

What Is the Difference Between Photochromic and Transition Lenses?

Regardless of the lens material or manufacturing method, photochromic is the general term for lenses that automatically change tint in response to light.

You may also hear people use “transition lenses” as a general description for any lens that changes from clear to dark. In technical terms, however, photochromic refers to the lens category, while Transitions refers to one brand within it.

Transitions is a brand that produces photochromic lens technology. Every Transitions lens is therefore photochromic, but not every photochromic lens is made by Transitions.

Are Photochromic Lenses Good for Your Eyes?

Photochromic lenses can support everyday eye protection by adapting to brighter outdoor light.

  • UV protection: Many photochromic lenses can provide UV400 protection* in both their clear and darkened states, helping to reduce exposure to UVA and UVB rays.
  • Outdoor comfort: The tint reduces the amount of visible light reaching the eyes, which can make dealing with bright conditions more comfortable instead of having to constantly squint.
  • Blue-violet light filtering: Some options filter part of the blue-violet light from sunlight and screens, although this should be considered an added feature rather than the main reason to choose them.

*Protection levels vary between products, so check the lens specifications with your optometrist before deciding.

Photochromic lenses combine prescription correction with an adaptive tint, but they do not perform exactly like a dedicated pair of sunglasses.

Most standard photochromic lenses remain relatively clear inside a car because the windshield already has a UV protective layer.

Can be added to single-vision and progressive prescriptions 

A photochromic tint is not automatically polarised and may not control strong reflected glare 

Many options provide UV protection in both clear and dark states 

The darkest tint will not be as dark as dedicated sunglasses 

For frequent daytime driving or strong reflected glare, prescription sunglasses may be more suitable. Photochromic lenses turn darker in cooler temperatures, therefore they will not be as dark as we expect them to be. When to Wear Photochromic Lenses

Photochromic lenses may suit people who want one prescription pair that adapts between indoor and outdoor settings.

They may be suitable if you:

  • Move frequently between indoor and outdoor spaces
  • Commute partly on foot or spend short periods outside throughout the day
  • Prefer not to carry a separate pair of prescription sunglasses
  • Wear single-vision or progressive glasses throughout the day
  • Want added tint and UV protection during routine outdoor activities

They may be less suitable as your only sun-protection option if you:

  • Drive for long periods during the day
  • Require an immediately clear lens upon entering a building
  • Want a consistently dark sunglass tint
  • Need polarisation for strong reflected glare
  • Prefer separate frames for indoor and outdoor wear

Types of Photochromic Glasses

Photochromic glasses come in most common lens types, so they can usually be matched to your prescription and needs:

  • Single-vision lenses: Correct one field of vision, such as short-sightedness, long-sightedness or astigmatism.
  • Progressive lenses: Combine distance, intermediate and near prescriptions within one lens without a visible dividing line.
  • Reading lenses: Provide near-vision correction with a tint that activates outdoors.
  • High-index lenses: Offer a thinner lens profile for stronger prescriptions, subject to the photochromic materials available for the required index.
  • Non-prescription lenses: Provide an adaptive tint without refractive correction.

If you already wear progressive lenses, photochromic technology can often be incorporated into the same prescription. Availability, tint colours and activation performance may differ according to the lens design and material selected.

Adding Coatings to Photochromic Lenses

Once the prescription design and photochromic tint have been selected, additional coatings can be applied to improve the lens surface.

An anti-reflective coating reduces reflections from the front and back of the lenses. This can improve clarity indoors and reduce distracting surface reflections when the lenses are darkened. It does not make the photochromic tint activate more strongly, but it can make the glasses more comfortable to use across different lighting conditions.

Other available treatments may include scratch-resistant, water-repellent or smudge-resistant coatings.
